Notre Approche

Our Approach
How instruction actually works at Sekoly Kintana.
A trilingual school, not an English-only school
Many families believe instruction happens only in English here. That isn’t true, and we want to be clear about it from the start.
Every child receives their primary instruction, in reading, writing, and math, in their strongest language (L1), as long as that language is French, English, or Malagasy. A child whose mother tongue is Malagasy learns to read and count in Malagasy. A French-speaking child learns in French. That’s how real learning works: you build first in the language you already master.
Once a child has a solid year of fluency in their L1, we gradually introduce their L2, then their L3. The pace varies by child. Some have an L2 nearly as strong as their L1 and move faster. For others, whose L2 is an entirely new language, we take the time needed. It’s never a race.
An integrated, STEAM+ curriculum
Our curriculum connects science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics through an integrated, project-based approach, layered with the human and cultural dimension unique to Sekoly Kintana. Children explore geography, history, earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, coding, art, music, and multiple languages, always centering Madagascar first, then Africa, then the world.
One subject, one language, for example
From a certain age, some subjects are taught in a specific language, to give children a chance to practice and build vocabulary in a concrete context. Here are a few examples, not an exhaustive list:
- Karate, from age 5, in Malagasy
- Cooking, ages 3-6, in Malagasy with English or French support; from age 6, in French
- Science, in English, with French and Malagasy support for children who aren’t yet fluent
- Computer science, ages 9-12, initial instruction in French or Malagasy; programming and algorithms taught in English
This isn’t arbitrary. Learning an L2 or L3 is more effective when it’s anchored in a practical activity, rather than only through reading and writing.
We also offer separate instruction in French literature, Malagasy literature, and English literature.
Our goal for 12-to-15-year-olds
We want our 12-to-15-year-old students to be fully fluent in English, capable of doing science, research, and coding in that language. But this never comes at the expense of French or Malagasy. Every student continues to write, read, and research in all three languages. It isn’t one or the other. It’s all of it, together, with intention.
Learning to read: through sounds, not by heart
In many schools, children learn letter names and hope that, over time, they’ll magically learn to read. At Sekoly Kintana, we do the opposite.
Children start with letter sounds, not letter names. They don’t learn to write or recognize a letter until they’ve fully mastered its sound. From there, we introduce phonetic combinations, then gradually build toward fluency, slowly adding in the exceptions specific to each language.
Malagasy is roughly 70-80% phonetic. French, roughly 60%. English, roughly 40%.
Understanding, not memorizing
We apply the same logic in math: children manipulate concrete units before ever seeing a written number. Counting to a hundred from memory isn’t the same as truly understanding what a hundred is.
At Sekoly Kintana, we talk about mastery, not memorization. Children construct their own understanding from the start. From that understanding comes repetition, then mastery.
What about exams?
Students raised on this approach generally do very well on standardized exams, precisely because they’ve practiced real mastery. Sekoly Kintana is an officially recognized school in Madagascar, with all required documentation. For any family transitioning out, we provide a clear equivalency, recognized by the receiving school.
Ny Fomba Fiasanay
Ny fomba anatanterahana ny fampianarana ao amin’ny Sekoly Kintana.
Sekoly telo fiteny, fa tsy sekoly anglisy irery
Maro ny fianakaviana no mihevitra fa amin’ny teny anglisy ihany no ampianarana ato. Tsy marina izany, ary tianay ho azo antoka izany hatramin’ny voalohany.
Ny zaza tsirairay dia mahazo ny fampianarana fototra, amin’ny famakiana, fanoratana, ary matematika, amin’ny fiteniny matanjaka indrindra (L1), raha toa ka anisan’ny teny frantsay, anglisy, na malagasy izany. Ny zaza malagasy amin’ny fiteniny voalohany dia mianatra mamaky teny sy manisa amin’ny teny malagasy. Ny zaza frantsay kosa mianatra amin’ny teny frantsay. Izany no fomba tena fianarana: manorina aloha amin’ny teny efa haizany.
Rehefa afaka herintaona feno mahay ny L1-ny ny zaza, dia ampidirinay tsikelikely ny L2, ary avy eo ny L3. Miovaova arakaraky ny zaza ny hafainganam-pandehany. Tsy fifaninanana mihitsy izany.
Fandaharam-pianarana miray, karazana STEAM+
Ny fandaharam-pianaranay dia mampitambatra ny siansa, ny teknolojia, ny injeniera, ny zavakanto, ary ny matematika amin’ny fomba miray sy mifototra amin’ny tetikasa, ampiana ny lafiny maha-olona sy kolontsaina manokana ho an’ny Sekoly Kintana. Ny zaza dia mikaroka jeografia, tantara, siansan’ny tany, biolojia, simia, fizika, astronomia, programmation, zavakanto, mozika, ary teny maro, manomboka foana amin’i Madagasikara, avy eo Afrika, ary avy eo ny tontolo iainana.
Lesona iray, teny iray, ohatra
Manomboka amin’ny taona sasany, misy lesona sasany ampianarina amin’ny teny voafaritra, mba hanome fahafahana ny zaza hanao fanazaran-tena ary hampitombo ny voambolany amin’ny toe-javatra tena misy. Ireto misy ohatra vitsivitsy, tsy feno:
- Karate, manomboka amin’ny 5 taona, amin’ny teny malagasy
- Fahandroana, 3 ka hatramin’ny 6 taona, amin’ny teny malagasy misy fanampiana anglisy na frantsay; manomboka amin’ny 6 taona, amin’ny teny frantsay
- Siansa, amin’ny teny anglisy, misy fanampiana frantsay sy malagasy ho an’ny zaza tsy mbola mahay tsara
- Informatika, 9 ka hatramin’ny 12 taona, fampianarana voalohany amin’ny teny frantsay na malagasy; ny programmation sy ny algorithme dia ampianarina amin’ny teny anglisy
Ny tanjonay ho an’ny 12-15 taona
Tianay ho tena mahay ny teny anglisy ny mpianatra 12 ka hatramin’ny 15 taona, ka afaka manao siansa, fikarohana, ary programmation amin’io teny io. Kanefa tsy mba mandà ny teny frantsay na malagasy mihitsy izany. Tsy iray na ny iray hafa fa avokoa, miaraka, misy tanjona.
Fianarana mamaky teny: amin’ny feo, tsy amin’ny fitadidiana
Amin’ny sekoly maro, ny zaza dia mianatra ny anaran’ny litera ary manantena, amin’ny fotoana, fa hahay mamaky teny ho azy. Ao amin’ny Sekoly Kintana, ny mifanohitra amin’izany no ataonay.
Manomboka amin’ny feon’ny litera ny zaza, tsy amin’ny anarany. Ny teny malagasy dia manodidina ny 70-80% mifanaraka amin’ny feony. Ny frantsay, manodidina ny 60%. Ny anglisy, manodidina ny 40%.
Fahatakarana, tsy fitadidiana
Ao amin’ny Sekoly Kintana, miresaka momba ny fahaizana feno izahay, tsy fitadidiana. Ny zaza dia manorina ny fahatakarany manokana hatrany am-boalohany.
Ary ny fanadinana?
Mahomby be amin’ny fanadinana voafaritra ny mpianatra nianatra tamin’ity fomba ity, indrindra satria efa nanao fanazaran-tena tamin’ny fahaizana marina izy ireo. Sekoly ekena ara-panjakana ao Madagasikara ny Sekoly Kintana, misy ny antontan-taratasy ilaina rehetra.
